Knowing the do’s and don’ts of piano moving can save you time, effort, and potential damage to your beloved instrument.

Do's and Don'ts When Moving A Piano

Do's and Don'ts When Moving A Piano

Whether you're changing your living space or moving to a new house, moving a piano can be a difficult undertaking. Following some essential do's and don'ts can save you time, effort, and potential damage to your grand piano.

What You Should Do When Moving A Piano

  • Hire Professional Movers
Pianos are sensitive, complex instruments. It’s imperative to work with movers who specialize in piano relocation. They possess the equipment, know-how, and methods necessary to transfer the piano securely without endangering it or your belongings.

  • Measure Doorways, Hallways, and Staircases
Measure all doorways, hallways, and staircases to make sure the piano will fit through them before moving it. Being aware of this information in advance can help you avoid needless delays or mishaps when moving.

  • Use Proper Equipment
Ensure that the proper tools are used when relocating a piano. Ramps, cushioning, piano dollies, and belts are a few things that can make the process easier and safer. Proper padding will help protect the piano from scratches and damage.

  • Prepare the Piano for the Move
Before moving the piano, make sure every component is secure. To safeguard the keys, shut the piano’s lid and cover it with blankets or cushioning. If the piano has removable parts like a pedal or legs, consider disassembling them to make transportation easier.

  • Get Help from Others
Even if you’re not hiring professionals, never try to move a piano alone. Pianos are extremely heavy and can easily cause injury if not handled properly. To split the workload and move the piano securely, always recruit the assistance of several persons.

What You Should Not Do When Moving A Piano

  • Don’t Drag the Piano
One of the biggest mistakes people make is trying to drag the piano across the floor. This can damage the piano’s legs, internal components, and your flooring. Always use a dolly and move the piano carefully, especially when going up or down stairs.

  • Don’t Underestimate the Weight
Pianos are deceptively heavy. A grand piano can weigh anywhere from 600 to 1,200 pounds. Even an upright piano can easily weigh 300 to 500 pounds. Don’t underestimate the weight and always ensure you have enough people and proper equipment for the move.

  • Don’t Rush the Move
Moving a piano takes time and patience. Rushing the process increases the likelihood of accidents and damage. Plan ahead, take it slow, and be cautious to avoid mistakes that could cost you more in the long run.

  • Don’t Forget to Tune the Piano After the Move
Pianos can become out of tune when they are moved due to vibrations, temperature changes, and movement of internal components. After the move, let the piano sit in its new location for a couple of weeks to acclimatize, then schedule a professional tuning.

  • Don’t Skip Insurance
If you’re moving the piano yourself or hiring movers, make sure your piano is covered by insurance. This will protect you in case of accidental damage during the move. Professional piano movers often offer additional insurance, which is worth considering.

Can a Piano Be Moved into a Portable Container?

It is possible to transport a piano into a portable container, but doing it safely and properly needs advance planning. Pianos and other large, heavy things can be easily transported with the use of portable containers, such as those used for long-distance relocation or temporary storage. It is strongly suggested that you purchase additional insurance if you are going to make the most of them to transport your expensive instrument.

Summary

Although moving a piano is not an easy undertaking, it can be completed successfully with the correct planning, assistance, and tools. Prioritize the piano’s integrity and safety at all times to make sure it gets to its new home in flawless condition. Following these do’s and don’ts of piano moving will help you avoid costly mistakes and keep your piano sounding beautiful for years to come.

A very professional company who assisted with a local move consisting of one large heavy piece of furniture (sofa bed). The sofa was handled with care, wrapped in blankets and stretch wrapped for travel, and protected every step of the way down a flight of stairs to a clean delivery truck. They said they would be there at 1:00pm and at 12:55p they pulled into the drive. Punctuality is impeccable. I can’t say enough about them and I will definitely use them again.

I had Cisco, general manager of Stork Moving, help us with an internal move. He was wonderful! He arrived exactly on time with the one helper that we had talked about to facilitate the move. They were pleasant, efficient and did the move in a very professional manner. They placed the furniture exactly where we wanted it and were willing to move it around to the right spot. They really wanted to make you happy with the move. I would highly recommend Cisco (Stork Moving) for your moving needs.

Stork Moving did an outstanding job moving my baby grand piano to prepare for a carpet installation. They were prompt, efficient and knowledgeable in disassembling and reassembling my piano to my complete satisfaction. Their friendliness and skillfulness put me at ease. My piano tuner confirmed my piano remained in its original condition without any damage. Their price was extremely reasonable for the high quality customer service I received. I would recommend them to anyone.
