Comprehensive Guide on Moving with Furniture

Moving furniture can be one of the most daunting parts of relocating to a new home. Learning how to move furniture effectively can save you time, effort, and potential damage while remodeling your existing space or moving to a new one. This guide will walk you through the essential steps, tips, and tools needed to ensure a smooth furniture moving experience.

Guidelines On Moving With Furniture

1. Organizing Your Move

Assess Your Furniture: Before you start packing, take stock of your furniture. Consider the following details.

  • Dimensions: Measure each piece of furniture to determine if it can fit through doorways, hallways, and staircases in both your current and new home.
  • Value: Identify any high-value items that may require special handling or insurance.
  • Condition: Decide if you want to keep, sell, donate, or discard any pieces.

Create a Moving Timeline: Plan your move several weeks in advance. Create a timeline that includes these steps.

  • Booking a moving company (if needed)
  • Scheduling utility disconnections and reconnections
  • Packing dates
  • Moving day

2. Gathering Packing Supplies

Essential Supplies: Before you start packing, take stock of your furniture. Consider the following supplies.

  • Moving boxes: Different sizes for different items.
  • Packing tape: Heavy-duty tape to secure boxes.
  • Bubble wrap or packing paper: For fragile items.
  • Furniture blankets: To protect larger pieces.
  • Dollies and furniture sliders: To make moving heavy items easier.

Packing Materials: Ensure you have enough supplies on hand. Consider purchasing or renting these materials.

  • Wardrobe boxes for clothes on hangers
  • Specialty boxes for TVs and other electronics
  • Plastic wrap for securing shelves, drawers, and doors

3. Packing Your Furniture

Disassemble When Possible: If possible, disassemble larger pieces of furniture before moving day. In this way, they can be moved around with much ease and without the risk of damage. Store all screws, bolts, and other small parts in labeled bags through which the reassembly of your furniture becomes that simple later on.

Secure Your Items: Proper protection of your furniture is among the most vital factors to protect against possible damage while moving.

  • Wrap: Use furniture blankets to wrap couches, chairs, and tables. Secure them with packing tape or stretch wrap.
  • Cushion: Place bubble wrap or packing paper around delicate items like glass tops or decorative pieces.
  • Label: Clearly label all boxes and furniture with their destination rooms to streamline unpacking.

4. Hire Professional Movers

It will undoubtedly be quite tempting to move your furniture yourself and save a few money. However, using professional movers typically enables you to recoup your money. A good mover will be able to employ the necessary skills and equipment in offering safe and efficient transportation of your furniture. They can facilitate you by disassembling and assembling your furniture as well. This saves a lot of time and energy.

5. Strategic Loading of the Moving Truck

Begin the loading with the heaviest and largest items, like sofas and dining tables, to ensure they are safely positioned at the bottom. Distribute the weights equally inside the truck to avoid shifting during the journey to your new residence. Fasten your furniture securely with straps to prevent anything from moving around during the trip.

  • Heaviest items first: Load larger pieces like sofas and dressers at the bottom and against the walls of the moving truck.
  • Distribute weight: Balance the load by placing heavier items on one side and lighter items on the other.
  • Secure everything: Use straps or ropes to keep items in place and prevent shifting during transit.
  • Lift with your legs: Avoid injury by using proper lifting techniques.
  • Teamwork: Enlist friends or family to help, especially for heavy or awkward pieces.
  • Watch out for doorways: Measure your furniture and doorways in advance to avoid last-minute surprises.

6. Transporting Your Furniture

Choosing the Right Transportation: Choosing the right moving truck is an important factor to consider when planning a furniture relocation. There are three main types of moving trucks available, including cargo vans, box trucks, and semi-trucks. Each type has its own set of advantages and disadvantages, which should be taken into account before making a final decision.

  • Cargo Vans: Small and lightweight furniture can be transported in a cargo van, a type of moving truck. For short-distance or local relocation, it is the perfect option. However, its low weight capacity means it may not be appropriate for large or heavy furniture, and it has limited space for larger items.
  • Box Truck: Small to medium-sized furniture can be moved using a box truck, a type of medium-sized moving vehicle. It is a superior choice for short- to medium-distance movements because it can hold more weight than a cargo van. However, it comes with higher rental costs and may not be suitable for long distance moves.
  • Semi-Truck: A semi-truck has the highest weight capacity among the three types of moving trucks and can transport a significant amount of furniture and other belongings. But it also has higher rental prices, is difficult to operate in confined locations, and can be expensive to fuel.

7. Setting Up and Unloading

When you’ve finally moved into your new house, unpack everything and put your furniture back together, starting with the basics like your dining table and bed, so you can get comfortable. The new space deserves the time it takes to arrange your furniture; also, do not rush in trying out different arrangements.

Unloading Strategy:

  • Plan your layout: Before unloading, have a general idea of where each piece will go in your new space.
  • Prioritize essentials: Unload and set up essential furniture first, such as beds and sofas, to create a comfortable living space.

Organizing and Assembly:

  • Reassemble: Put together any disassembled furniture first.
  • Take your time: Arrange furniture based on functionality and aesthetics, considering how you will use the space.

8. Post-Move Guide

Moving with furniture does not have to be the most daunting task. You can go about it easily by planning in advance, getting rid of unwanted stuff, and taking this necessary precautions to protect your furniture.

Inspect for Damage: Verify that your furniture is in good condition after everything has been unloaded. In the event that you need to file a claim with a moving company, take pictures of any problems.

Arrange and Decorate: Once your furniture is in place, take time to organize and decorate your new space. This can help you feel more at home and settled.

Summary

Relocating furniture doesn’t have to be a difficult undertaking. You may streamline the procedure and reduce stress by making advance plans, assembling the necessary tools, and employing the suitable methods. Whether you want to do it yourself or hire movers, following these tips can help make the move to your new home smooth and easy.

A very professional company who assisted with a local move consisting of one large heavy piece of furniture (sofa bed). The sofa was handled with care, wrapped in blankets and stretch wrapped for travel, and protected every step of the way down a flight of stairs to a clean delivery truck. They said they would be there at 1:00pm and at 12:55p they pulled into the drive. Punctuality is impeccable. I can’t say enough about them and I will definitely use them again.

I had Cisco, general manager of Stork Moving, help us with an internal move. He was wonderful! He arrived exactly on time with the one helper that we had talked about to facilitate the move. They were pleasant, efficient and did the move in a very professional manner. They placed the furniture exactly where we wanted it and were willing to move it around to the right spot. They really wanted to make you happy with the move. I would highly recommend Cisco (Stork Moving) for your moving needs.

Stork Moving did an outstanding job moving my baby grand piano to prepare for a carpet installation. They were prompt, efficient and knowledgeable in disassembling and reassembling my piano to my complete satisfaction. Their friendliness and skillfulness put me at ease. My piano tuner confirmed my piano remained in its original condition without any damage. Their price was extremely reasonable for the high quality customer service I received. I would recommend them to anyone.
