Whether you’re moving across town or across the state, avoiding common pitfalls can save you time, money, and unnecessary stress.

Common Mistakes You Don't Want to Make When Moving

One of the most stressful life events is moving, and with so many details to coordinate, it's simple to forget crucial details or make mistakes that could make things more difficult. You may save time, money, and needless stress by avoiding typical errors while relocating, whether it's across town or across the state. The most frequent errors made by movers are listed below, along with advice on how to avoid them.

Don't Make These Mistakes When Moving

1. Not Planning Ahead

One of the biggest mistakes you can make when moving is waiting until the last minute to plan. Moving requires careful preparation, including securing a moving company, packing, and handling logistics. Failing to start early can lead to rushed decisions, missed deadlines, and higher costs.

How to avoid it: Start planning your move at least a few months in advance. Create a moving checklist with a timeline that outlines key tasks like booking movers, purchasing supplies, and notifying relevant parties of your address change.

2. Undermining the Cost of Moving

Many people fail to account for all the costs involved in moving, from packing materials to mover fees, and even potential repairs or deposits for the new home. Underestimating these expenses can put unnecessary strain on your budget.

How to avoid it: Create a detailed budget that includes all potential costs, including mover fees, transportation, insurance, supplies, and any hidden fees that could arise. Research the pricing in advance so there are no surprises.

3. Neglecting to Clear the Clutter

While moving is an ideal opportunity to declutter, many people make the mistake of packing and moving things they no longer need. This drives up the expense of moving and complicates the process of unpacking as well.

How to avoid it: Before you begin packing, go through each room and decide what items you actually need to keep. Donate, sell, or recycle things that no longer serve a purpose. Downsizing your belongings will make the moving process faster, easier, and less expensive.

4. Ignoring to Label Boxes

Though it may seem insignificant, not labeling your boxes can make unpacking feel like a tedious scavenger quest. You’ll need some necessities as soon as you get to your new house, and it can be stressful to dig through a pile of unmarked boxes.

How to avoid it: Label each box with its contents and the room it belongs to. Consider color-coding boxes by room to make things even easier. Be sure to mark boxes containing fragile items so movers know to handle them with care.

5. Choosing the Wrong Moving Company

Not all moving companies are created equal, and selecting the wrong one can lead to damaged belongings, delayed deliveries, or unexpected charges. Many people rush this step or go with the cheapest option without doing proper research.

How to avoid it: Get thorough written quotes from many moving firms, check customer reviews, and do your homework. Verify that the business has insurance and a license to safeguard your possessions. Cheap doesn’t always mean good—balance affordability with reliability.

6. Forgetting to Measure

A common mistake is failing to measure your furniture and your new space before moving. You might find that certain pieces of furniture won’t fit through the doorways or in the rooms of your new home, which could lead to last-minute scrambling.

How to avoid it: Before moving day, measure large items like couches, beds, and tables, as well as doorways, staircases, and rooms in your new home. This will help you determine whether your current furniture will fit or if adjustments are needed.

7. Packing Heavy Items in Large Boxes

It might seem efficient to put as much as possible into a single large box, but overloading boxes—especially with heavy items—can make them difficult and unsafe to move. Furthermore, there is a higher chance of breakage or harm to the contents of hefty boxes.

How to avoid it: Pack heavy items like books, dishes, or electronics in smaller boxes to make them easier to carry. Save large boxes for lighter items like bedding, pillows, or clothing. This will reduce the risk of injury or damage during the move.

8. Overlooking Important Documents

It’s simple to lose track of vital documents like birth certificates, passports, medical records, or financial documentation in the hustle and bustle of packing and moving. Losing track of these documents can create unnecessary stress and headaches during your transition.

How to avoid it: Keep all important documents in a separate, clearly labeled folder or box that you carry with you during the move. Don’t pack them away in a moving truck, as they could get lost or delayed.

9. Not Scheduling Utility Transfers

Arriving at your new home to find no electricity, water, or internet is a common moving mishap. Many people forget to schedule utility transfers or set them up too late, resulting in days without essential services.

How to avoid it: Contact utility companies a few weeks in advance to schedule shut-off at your old home and set-up at your new one. Don’t forget essential services like electricity, water, gas, internet, and waste collection.

10. Leaving Out Insurance

Some consumers mistakenly believe that their possessions will always be covered by their homeowners’ or renters’ insurance or the moving company, only to find out after damage or loss occurs that this isn’t the case. Relocating without the right insurance is a dangerous mistake.

How to avoid it: Review your insurance options before moving. Check with your renters or homeowners insurance to see what’s covered during a move, and consider purchasing additional coverage from your moving company for extra protection.

11. Trying to Handle Everything on Your Own

Relocating is a major task, and a common error made by many is attempting to do everything alone. Making this decision may result in errors, stress, and exhaustion in the process.

How to avoid it: Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Whether it’s hiring professional movers, asking friends for assistance, or delegating tasks to family members, having support can make the move smoother and less overwhelming.

Summary

Moving doesn’t have to be a stressful ordeal if you’re prepared and aware of the potential pitfalls. Making preparations in advance, maintaining organization, and avoiding these typical blunders will help you have a more enjoyable relocation. Remember, a successful move is not just about getting to your new home—it’s about doing it efficiently and without unnecessary stress!

A very professional company who assisted with a local move consisting of one large heavy piece of furniture (sofa bed). The sofa was handled with care, wrapped in blankets and stretch wrapped for travel, and protected every step of the way down a flight of stairs to a clean delivery truck. They said they would be there at 1:00pm and at 12:55p they pulled into the drive. Punctuality is impeccable. I can’t say enough about them and I will definitely use them again.

I had Cisco, general manager of Stork Moving, help us with an internal move. He was wonderful! He arrived exactly on time with the one helper that we had talked about to facilitate the move. They were pleasant, efficient and did the move in a very professional manner. They placed the furniture exactly where we wanted it and were willing to move it around to the right spot. They really wanted to make you happy with the move. I would highly recommend Cisco (Stork Moving) for your moving needs.

Stork Moving did an outstanding job moving my baby grand piano to prepare for a carpet installation. They were prompt, efficient and knowledgeable in disassembling and reassembling my piano to my complete satisfaction. Their friendliness and skillfulness put me at ease. My piano tuner confirmed my piano remained in its original condition without any damage. Their price was extremely reasonable for the high quality customer service I received. I would recommend them to anyone.
